Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof wanted by Everton
Everton boss Marco Silva wants Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof at Goodison Park.
Silva, installed as the Toffees new head coach last week, has drawn up a short-list of transfer targets with new director of football Marcel Brands.
And he’s earmarked 23-year old centre back Lindelof as a priority £35 million signing – if United will consider off-loading the Swedish international.
Lindelof – with the Swedish squad heading to the World Cup - had a difficult first season adjusting to life in the Premier League after his £31.5 million switch from Benfica to United last summer.
But Silva knows him well from his knowledge of Portuguese football where Lindelof was highly regarded at Benfica.
Lindelof made two high-profile mistakes which condemned United to a 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield early last season and struggled to reach the levels he showed at Benfica and for Sweden.
There’s no suggestion Jose Mourinho wants to ditch Lindelof so soon after signing him and insiders at United’s Carrington training base say the Swede will be given another season to reach the levels of consistency demanded by the Old Trafford boss.
But with six centre backs in his squad – Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Lindelof – Mourinho knows he’s top heavy in that department.
Sweden manager Janne Andersson would be surprised if United let Lindelof go saying: “Victor was outstanding in our two World Cup play-off games against Italy when they didn’t score against us in either game.
“It was a difficult transition from Portuguese football to the Premier League for Victor but I’m absolutely certain he will be a success for United going forward.”
